Ludwig and Elisabeth Schwindt
Ludwig (Louis) Schwindt (Swint) was born September 15, 1839 in Norka, Russia, the son of David Schwindt (born 1815) and Christina Hohnstein (born 1814).
Louis married Anna Elisabeth Scheidemann on January 31, 1861. Anna Elisabeth was born in Norka on November 25, 1839, the daughter of Georg Scheidemann (born 1818) and Christina Schreiner (born 1817).
In 1890, Louis immigrated to the United States arriving in Baltimore on September 16, 1890 aboard the steamship Karlsruhe which departed from Bremen, Germany. Anna Elisabeth is not listed on the ship record. Louis is traveling with Christina Hohnstein (age 22) who would marry John Schwindt shortly her after arrival in Portland. Louis was also traveling with his adult children: Heinrich Schwindt (age 23), Magdalena Schwindt (age 23) and Louise Schwindt (age 22). Two small children were also in the group: Heinrich (11 months) and Christina Schwindt (2 years old), likely the children of Heinrich.
The 1891 Albina City Directory shows that David was living on Sacramento Street, five lots east of Margareta Avenue (later Union Avenue and now MLK Blvd.). His house was located between his cousins David Schwindt and Adam Schwindt who were also early Portland settlers.
Louis worked as a day laborer and by 1900 the family was renting a house at 335 Crosby (near Broadway).
