Adam and Katharina Schwindt
Adam Schwindt (Swint) was born June 14, 1856, in Norka, Russia, the son of David Schwindt (born 1828) and Magdalena Schmer (born 1830).
Adam married Katharina Elisabeth Bauer on January 8, 1875. Katharina was born in Norka on June 9, 1856, the daughter of Heinrich Bauer (born 1831) and Anna Katharina Lehr (born 1829). Katharina was the sister of Christina Elisabeth Bauer, who married Peter Gerlach. Peter and Elisabeth were also early Portland pioneers.
Adam's father, stepmother (David and Katharina), and his half-brothers (Johannes and Heinrich) immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on June 4, 1887, from Bremen, Germany. The Schwindts were traveling with a large group of people from Norka, including Peter and Elisabeth Gerlach. The Schwindts and other group members were living in Albina by 1891.
In 1891, Adam lived on Sacramento Street, four lots east of Margareta Avenue (later Union Avenue and now MLK Blvd.) in 1891. His father was living two lots further east. The 1893 City Directory shows Adam working as a laborer and living at 420 Sacramento Street (now 602 NE Sacramento). Katharina was working at the Portland Cordage Company.
By 1901, Adam was in the garbage hauling business.
Katharina died on January 2, 1916 in Clackamas County, Oregon. Adam died December 22, 1932, in Canby, Oregon.
