H and W Food Market
Alexander Hildermann, one of the founders of Hildermann's Grocery and Meat Market, decided to come out of retirement on April 1, 1933 when he purchased the John Shaller Grocery Store at 1500 NE Alberta Street. He reopened the store on April 3rd with his brother-in-law, John Wensrich, as a partner. Alexander and John soon also bought out the next-door butcher and incorporated that operation into their store.
This building soon proved to be too small and Alexander and John bought an existing store in the Lincoln Park Annex at 4077 NE 9th (at the intersection with Mason Street) from a Mr. Annas. The building was constructed in 1906 and had served as a store and barber shop.
Alexander ran the grocery side and John the butcher side. John made his own sausage and soon developed a good reputation. Alexander already had a reputation for his outstanding pickles and sauerkraut.
In 1935, Alexander bought out John Wensrich's interest in the business and renamed the store Alexander Hildermann Food Market. By January 1940, the store was owned by G. J. Honstein (Hohnstein).
