Remembering
I remember Danewolf’s Grocery store on the corner of NE 13th and Failing, as I always went there for groceries. I had six brothers: Larry, Danny, Jim, Melvin, Ricky, and Ronnie, the twins. I remember the old neighborhood well. My dad was Irish, and my mother was German. Edna Reisig, Albert Schreiber’s mother, Dorothy Markle, and Martha Schwab often met and gossiped daily. They were such good friends. I remember that almost all the people around us were of German-Russian descent. The Schleinings, Derrs (who lived on 14th off of Fremont), Schneidermans, and Millers, who lived on 13th and Mason. I don’t remember all the names, but I went to Sabin in the 7th and 8th grade (1955-57). I remember everyone in that neighborhood being very kind, strict in their values, and almost always having fun. I don’t recall any trouble in the area except for the mischief of us kids occasionally. The people were always hard-working and loved the weekends.
