Peter Schnell Businesses
Peter Schnell was born on October 18, 1870, the son of Conrad and Anna Maria Schnell, who were early pioneers in Portland. Peter married Emma Miller, the daughter of John O. and Alice Miller, on February 19, 1891. They had three children:
Friedrich Johann, born 1892
Louis, born 1896
Adam W. was born in 1898
When he married, Peter worked at an iron foundry, earning $12.00 weekly. He became ill with rheumatism around 1892. Shortly after his recovery, Peter and Emma started a grocery store at the corner of Union Avenue and Fremont Street, and they lived in the back part of the store.
In 1902, Peter and his father-in-law, John O. Miller, started another small store at the same intersection of Union Avenue and Fremont. Peter and John's wife, Alice, worked behind the counter, and John's son, Adam, delivered groceries. Sadly, the profits for this store were small, and the business was dissolved after one year. Peter bought another store across the street, which he kept for three years.
Peter and Emma separated sometime before 1910, and Emma was remarried to Otto Schneider. Peter married Addie ?
Peter worked at odd jobs, including a stint as a billiards player. He established a gas station and auto parts business, which he managed through 1930.
Peter died on February 21, 1940, and was buried at the River View Cemetery in Portland.
