Lincoln Oil Company
John Leel was a true entrepreneur. Arriving in Portland in 1890, he was one of the Volga German pioneers in Portland. John owned his own garbage hauling business, a grocery store, the Atlantic Oil Company and the Lincoln Oil Company. It appears that the oil company began as Atlantic Oil about 1917. Around 1927, the plant moved to 3639 N. Columbia Blvd. and the company was renamed Lincoln Oil.
John was known affectionately by the nickname "Lampe öel" (Lamp oil) Leel. John's son, John Jr., and daughter Rilla both worked in the business.
