Heinrich and Katharina Bauer
Heinrich Bauer was born on February 24, 1852, in Norka, Russia, the son of Heinrich Bauer (born 1831) and Anna Catharina Lehr (born 1829).
Heinrich married Katharina Elisabeth Weigandt on January 25, 1872 in Norka. She was born February 25, 1852, in Norka, the daughter of Heinrich Weigandt (born 1832) and Katharina Maria Weitzel (born 1833).
Heinrich and Katharina's family immigrated to the United States in 1887, arriving in New York on June 4th aboard the steamship Ems, which sailed from Bremen, Germany. Traveling with them were their 6 children: George (born about 1874), Catharina (born about 1879), Johannes (born about 1880), Heinrich (born about 1881), Peter (born about 1884), and baby Elisabeth (born Feb 1887). Heinrich's parents accompanied them. There were several other families from Norka aboard this ship.
The Bauer family likely arrived in Portland about 1888. Heinrich and his father (Henry) are listed in the 1889 Albina City Directory, residing on the south side of E. Eugene Street, 1 lot east of Margareta Avenue (formerly Union Avenue and now MLK Blvd.). Both father and son were working as laborers.
The Bauer family moved to rural Washington County (near Bethany), where three more children were born in Oregon: Louis (September 1889), Charles (November 1894), and Minnie (June 1897).
Heinrich's mother, Anna Catharina, died sometime before the 1900 U.S. Census was taken. The census shows the entire Bauer family living on a rural Washington County, Oregon farm. The elder Heinrich (Henry) is shown as a widower living with his son.
Heinrich's father died in 1902 and is buried in the Bethany Pioneer Cemetery on Germantown Road.
In 1910, Henry and Kate continued to farm in rural Washington County with three children: Louis, Charles, and Minnie.
Charles served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He changed his name to Charles Bowers. Charles died in 1964 and is buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
The 1920 U.S. Census shows Henry and Kate continuing to live on the farm.
In 1930, Henry and Kate lived with their children Louis, Henry Jr., and Minnie on the farm in the Connell precinct of Washington County. Henry and Kate are listed on the census as "retired."
