Fountain Saloon

The Fountain Saloon was located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Union Avenue and Russell. The 1910 Portland City Directory shows that the establishment was co-owned with Henry Maier and was listed as the Maier & Hergert Saloon, located at 523 Union Avenue. In the 1912 City Directory, the business was listed as Henry Hergert's Saloon at 523 Union Avenue N. and 74 Russell. Henry Maier was operating another saloon at 740 Union Avenue. In 1924, the Egyptian Theater opened in a building adjacent to the Fontain Saloon, which had closed by then. As of July 2025, both sites are occupied by the New Song Community Church.

Heinrich (Henry) Elias Hergert was born on January 3, 1876, in Brunnental, Russia, the son of Elias Hergert (born 1835) and Maria Catharina Dietz (born 1837), both of whom were born in the colony of Walter.

Henry Elias married Anna Maria Linker around 1901. She was born on September 6, 1876, in Brunnental. They likely married in late 1901 and immigrated to the United States in 1902, having at least ten children, all of whom were born in the United States. Before starting the saloon, Henry worked primarily as a teamster and lived for many years at 842 E 6th St. N. (now 3960 NE 6th Avenue).

Henry is the brother of Reverend Jacob Hergert and Reverend Elias Hergert, both of whom lived in Portland.

Henry Elias Hergert died on December 9, 1937, in Portland. He was buried at the Rose City Cemetery. His wife, Anna Maria, died on February 26, 1954, and was also buried at Rose City Cemetery.
