Wanda June Schwabauer
Wanda June Byers was born in Sharon, Kansas, on January 3, 1933. She married Richard Allen Schwabauer in May 1955. Richard is a descendant of Johannes Schwabauer and Christina Margaretha Eissenmayer, who departed from Haßloch, Germany, in 1766 to seek a new life as colonists in Russia. After their marriage, Wanda developed a strong interest in the history of the Volga Germans and the ethnic settlement in Portland.
In May 1974, Wanda published a paper titled "The Portland Community of Germans from Russia" during her coursework at Portland State University. This important work comprises 64 pages divided into 8 chapters titled: 1. History and the Migration from Germany to Russia, 2. Life in Russia, 3. Causes for Leaving Russia, 4. People on the Move, 5. Portland First Settled, 6. Portland Community Expands, 7. Volga Relief Society, and 8. The Schwabauer Family. There are numerous illustrations, graphs, tables, and charts.
Wanda's paper documents many aspects of life in the Portland community of Volga Germans that would have been lost to time without her efforts. We are very grateful for her excellent work.
Wanda died in Portland on June 26, 1977, and was buried at the Aurora Community Cemetery.
