Schnell's Grocery Store and Meat Markets
Peter Nicolaus Schnell was born on June 28, 1871, in Norka, Russia, the son of Conrad Nicolaus Schnell (born 1847) and Catharina Hein (born 1848).
Peter married Elisabeth Lehl on February 1, 1894 in Norka. She was born in Norka on February 12, 1872, the daughter of Georg Heinrich Lehl (born 1845) and Louisa Albrecht (born 1843).
Three children were born in Russia:
Paulina, born March 4, 1895
Christina Margaretha, born January 18, 1897
Philipp, born May 13, 1899
Peter's father died in 1897. Peter, his wife Elisabeth, their three children, and his mother immigrated to the United States in August 1899. The Schnell's settled in Portland, Oregon. Peter and Elisabeth became parents to at least five more children:

Anna, born January 2, 1905
John, born January 25, 1908
Esther, born April 8, 1910
Peter, born August 28, 1913
Peter and Elisabeth established Schnell's Meat Market, co-located with the Lehl & Popp Grocery at NE 10th and Failing.
Peter and Elisabeth were among the founding members of the Zion German Congregational Church, established in 1914. Daughter Christina was the first organist at the church.
The 1915 Portland City Directory shows a Schnell & Lehl meat market at 716 Union (now 3346 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd), owned by Peter Nicolaus Schnell and Conrad Lehl. Conrad Lehl was married to Amalia Christina Schnell, the sister of Peter Nicolaus.
The 1920 Census shows that the Schnell's owned the market at 716 Union Avenue. They remained in the grocery and meat business through 1940.
Peter died on May 26, 1944, in Portland.
Elisabeth died on August 21, 1960. She was buried next to Peter at the Rose City Cemetery.
