Philipp and Margaretha Hergert
Johann Philipp Hergert was born in 1820 in the Volga German colony of Yagodnaya Polyana, Russia. He married Anna Margaretha Brecht in 1840. Anna Margaretha was born June 20, 1820, in Yagodnaya Polyana (Berry Meadow in English).
About 1855, the Hergerts moved to the daughter colony of Schöntal, Russia, on the east side of the Volga River.
At least eight children were born in Russia:
Philipp and Anna Margaretha, along with their daughter Catharina, Adam, and his family, immigrated to the United States in 1876, arriving in New York on October 24th aboard the steamship Mosel, which sailed from Bremen, Germany. The family traveled with a large group with ancestral ties to Yagodnaya Polyana. This group first settled in Kansas and named their new home Schöntal (Schoental) after their former residence in Russia. This colony was located near Olmitz in Barton County, which no longer exists.
By 1880, part of the Kansas group began to consider moving west. The Hergerts were a part of this group and were among the first Volga German immigrants to arrive in Oregon in 1881. They found temporary accommodation at the Oriental Hotel in East Portland. After a few months, the Hergerts (along with their daughter Maria Elisabeth and son-in-law Heinrich Scheuermann) found farmland south of Cornelius. The homestead was adjacent to today's SW Hergert Road near the former Hergert Quarry (also known as the Hayden Quarry).
The Hergerts were founding members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Blooming, Oregon, established on May 7, 1882.
Philipp died in 1890, and Anna Margaretha died on March 1, 1890.
