Nagel's Grocery and Market
Nagel's Grocery and Market was located at 4000 NE Union, on the northeast corner of the intersection with NE Shaver (now 4008 NE MLK Blvd.). The store was owned by John Conrad and Clara Evelyn Nagel. John Conrad was born on December 28, 1891, in Russia, the son of Johannes Nagel and Catharina Maria Sinner, both born in Norka, Russia. Johannes Nagel operated a dairy business in Albina.
John Conrad served in the U.S. military during World War I. He married Clara Evelyn Sorenson on August 14, 1919, in Portland. The newlyweds resided in Ritzville, Washington, where he worked as a salesman in the grocery business. Within a few years, the Nagels returned to Portland, where two daughters, Virginia Evelyn and Elinor Arline, were born. They opened a grocery store in the 1920s, and it remained in operation until at least 1952.
John Conrad died in 1972, and Clara died in 1975. Both were buried at the Rose City Cemetery.
