Melchior and Katharine Krieger
Melchior Krieger was born October 18, 1883 in Norka, Russia, the son of Heinrich Krieger (born 1844) and Magdalena Hohnstein (born 1844).
Melchior married Catharina Maria Biehn (Bihn) on February 25, 1864 in Norka. Catharina was born on November 9, 1883, in the colony of Beideck, the daughter of Adam Bihn (born 1853) and Catharina Würtz (born 1855).
Melchior served the Norka Church by pumping the large organ while the organist accompanied the congregation in the singing of hymns.
Melchior and Catharina migrated to the United States in 1907. They lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, briefly before settling in Portland.
After they arrived in Portland, Melchior (now Melger or Mel) and Catharina (now Katherine) became the parents of four children: Marie (born in 1908); William (born in 1910); Katherine (born in 1913); and, Edward John (born in 1918).
The Second German Congregational Church was organized in Melchior (Melger) and Katherine's home on June 22, 1913. Adam Bihn, Melger's brother-in-law, was also a charter member. Melger was responsible for ringing the church bells for all the services and meetings. Descendants of Melger and Katherine filled important leadership roles in the church over many decades.
Katherine died on February 6, 1929, in Portland.
Melchior died on October 9, 1935, and was buried beside Katherine.
