Lincoln Park Grocery and Market
The Lincoln Park Grocery and Market was founded by Adam Bihn, Sr. Adam, born in Beideck, Russia (Talovka), on April 2, 1886. He was raised and educated in Norka. Adam Sr. immigrated to the United States in July 1906 and initially settled in Nebraska. Adam came to Portland two years later with his wife, Katherine Elisabeth (Katie) Kaiser, and daughter Katherine. Katie was born in Norka on December 17, 1885.
Adam worked as a garbage hauler (teamster) after he arrived in Portland, and the family lived at 762 E. 10th Street N.
In 1913, Adam was one of the founders and builders of the Second German Congregational Church on NE 8th and Skidmore.
Adam established the Lincoln Park Grocery and Market in the 1920s and became a member of the United Grocers of Oregon (founded in 1915). The store was more commonly known as "Bihn's" by the local community. Many patrons felt they made some of the best red German sausage in town. The mixture of spices was a family secret. The store was at 3536 NE Union Avenue (now MLK Blvd.). Adam managed the store for nearly 50 years until his retirement in July 1959.
After his retirement, Adam Sr. turned the management of the store over to his sons, Adam Jr. and Donald Bihn, who continued operating the store for many more years, including the turbulent times in the 1960s and early 1970s when the store was robbed and vandalized on several occasions.
Adam Bihn Sr. died in November 1959 and was buried at the Lincoln Memorial Mausoleum.
