Karl and Marie Zitzer
Below is a photo of my grandparents, who immigrated to Portland in the early 1910s. They are Marie Huehnargardt Zitzer (from the colony of Wiesenmüller) and Karl Zitzer (from Katharinenstadt). They lived in Northeast Portland. In the early days there, they had a cow and chickens! But now, the freeway goes through their original land. They were forced to move to another house when the freeway was put in in the 1960s. This photo was taken in the early 1950s outside their house in northeast Portland before the freeway. It was mostly wooded when they first lived there, and their cow grazed in the woods.
