John and Emma Hohnstein
John Peter Hohnstein was born on May 27, 1877 in Norka, Russia, the son of Peter Hohnstein (born 1851) and Amalia Müller (born 1853). He came to the United States with his parents in 1886.
John married Anna Elisabeth (Emma) Schmer on November 12, 1899 in Denver, Colorado. She was born on December 18, 1879, the daughter of Peter Schmer (born 1846) and Catharina Preisendorf (born 1849). She came to the United States with her parents.
The following children became part of John and Emma's family as they looked for a new home in America:
John George Hohnstein, born September 28, 1900 in Denver, Colorado
Peter Honstein, born August 3, 1902 in McCook, Nebraska
Eleanore Salomon Hohnstein, born February 22, 1906 in Culbertson, Nebraska
John and Emma arrived in Portland in 1906 and a daughter, Sarah, was born there on May 29, 1908.
In 1910, the family resided at 750 E 10th N and John was working as a "scavenger" (garbage collector). He owned his horses and wagon.
John and Emma were founding members of the Zion German Congregational Church established in 1914.
In 1918, John and Emma lived at 590 Skidmore and he worked for Willamette Iron and Steel.
By 1920, the family was living at 590 E 16th N and John owned a farm. The family soon moved to Central Oregon and the community of Alfalfa.
John died in 1952 and was buried in Bend, Oregon. Emma sold the farm and moved back to Portland to live with Eleanor (married name Christiansen).
Emma died in Portland on December 24, 1955. She was buried with John at the Greenwood Cemetery.
