Henry and Anna Litzenberger
John Henry Litzenberger was born in June 1849 in Yagodnaya Polyana, Russia. Henry married Anna Elisabeth Barth in early 1869. Anna was born in Yagodnaya Polyana in October 1850. Two sons, John Henry (Oct 1869) and Conrad Henry (Sep 1876) were born in Russia, probably in the daughter colony of Neu-Yagodnaya Polyana.
The Litzenberger family migrated to the United States in 1875, arriving in New York on December 30, 1875 aboard the steamship Montreal. They initially settled near Lawrence, Kansas. A daughter, Sophia Catharine was born in February 1878 and a son, George, was born in March 1881.
The Litzenberger's were part of the first group of Volga Germans that traveled to Portland in 1881. Henry and Anna later moved to Eastern Washington where they farmed near Endicott. Some members of the family appear to have stayed in Portland where they are found in the church registers.
Henry and Anna's granddaughter, Eva Litzenberger Baldaree, resided in St. Helens, Oregon. She preserved many of the family stories, including Kattey Geray's Journey, written by Richard D. Scheuerman and published in the December 2018 Yagodnaya Polyana Newsletter titled Usu Leut vo Jagada.
