The Volga German community was served by the following professionals.
Dr. Fred Ebel
Dr. Frederick A. Ebel was born on December 8, 1908, in Lehigh, Kansas, the son of Alexander and Amelia Ebel from the Volga German colony of Stephan. The Ebel family moved to Saskatchewan, Canada, for a time and then returned to the United States in November 1920.
Fred married Alex Hildermann’s daughter, Estella, on June 25, 1933, in Portland. He started his own practice immediately after he graduated from dental school on June 7, 1932. His first practice was at 3815 NE Union Avenue, near the intersection with Failing Street, where he remained for 17 years. He then built his own clinic on the corner of Killingsworth and Commercial. Doctor Fred, as friends, family, and patients knew him, quickly developed a good reputation. He continued to practice for sixty-two years. Even in his nineties, he worked a two-day-a-week schedule. He was an inspiration to many young people, like Dr. Raymond Koch, who sought higher education and professional work.
Dr. Ebel died on February 26, 1996, and was interred at the Rose City Cemetery.
